Unlock Your Inner World: 5 Journaling Prompts for Self-Discovery

The greatest strength we have is understanding ourselves.

We won't be easily thrown if we interpret our surroundings as balanced between positives and negatives. Suddenly, we become masters of destiny, not victims of history.

1.

Morning Pages

Julia Cameron’s practice Morning Pages from The Artist’s Way has been serving the creative community since the 90s. It’s probably the only journaling method you’ll ever need. Designed to declutter your mind and make way for inspiration, write three pages of long-form writing first thing in the morning. You might feel silly at first, but it gets easier with practice.

Whenever I’ve dined solo, I bring a notebook and scrawl my thoughts in an attempt to fill the awkward absence of my phone. “I wonder if anyone thinks I’m a loser for having dinner alone.” One thought might start; ending with comments about cute bartender. Morning or evening pages—you choose.

2.

Daily reflections

Observe and reflect upon yourself and your day. You might learn something new. Sometimes, the most exciting things could be very draining. What’s suitable for someone else might not be so for you. Having this clarity has helped me understand and design my life in balance.

3.

Feelings Mindmap

My Mum always told me not to go to bed angry. But sometimes it’s hard to let go. Understanding why I’m feeling a certain way has always been a top priority. Investigating my feelings in a mind-map like this gives me ultimate clarity and balance.

Starting in the top left corner of the page, outline the event and process how it made you feel, utilising the entire double-page spread to map it out and find the root cause. It’s cheaper than counselling, that’s for sure.

4.

Affirmations

Write an encouraging note to yourself. Rewire negative thought patterns with truthful affirmations, from you to you.

5.

Before-bed Scribbles!

Hard or soft—let it out! It's the ultimate mind release, trust me.
